CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Onni Hotakainen
Canon: Stand Still Stay Silent
Age: 27
If Under 16, why is this character a good thematic fit for Somnia?: N/A
Canon Point: Adventure 2, p. 560 - After completing his nearly life-long mission of killing the kade that marked his family for death and destroyed his village, and making it back to civilization in Finland.
Wiki Link(s): His wiki page sucks, badly, so please see the personality and history sections I've written out in painstaking detail for previous games here. Please be aware, his canon has content warnings for extreme body horror, post-apocalyptic horror, pandemic/disease, spirituality, suicide (for the purpose of avoiding said body horror and disease), ghosts/spirits, animal death and animal body horror. Many or all of those topics may come out in his history.
SOMNIA-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
1. Dreams are how Sleep chooses you. What might draw your character into Somnia— a wound, a wish, a weakness? Would they follow the dream, or run from it?
In canon, Onni - and all mages in the SSSS universe - don't actually dream in the conventional sense. While they sleep, they inhabit a sort of shared dream space, with an area they can form themselves with their own thoughts and feelings, and the ability to visit other mages' dream spaces if they're willing to cross a dangerous "ocean" between. Because of this, it will most likely be curiosity and protectiveness that draws him into the dream. Usually, Onni is not the most curious character, not for curiosity's sake itself - no, too often that kind of curiosity will draw a person into the worst kind of danger and Onni has no interest in putting himself into danger.
However, in this case, were he to find a dream enticing him to follow, he may be concerned with whether it means any harm, to himself or to his family or other mages in the dream space, and Onni is nothing if not protective, particularly of his remaining family, Lalli. If this dream is dangerous, has access to all those in the dream realm, and may call to Lalli in future, then Onni is willing to place himself between his younger cousin and whatever danger that may come to greet him. He is willing and ready to seek it out, to experience it for what it is, and make sure that it isn't something that will in future become a predator for his cousin, another predator in a world that's filled with them. I think this reason could be called a wound - the wound of losing his family previously, and most recently his sister, to predators that he was unable to protect her from. It isn't a mistake he's willing to make again.
2. Somnia is a slow unraveling—of worlds, and of selves. How does your character respond to fear, transformation, and losing control? Do they fight, adapt, collapse?
FEAR
Onni has a difficult history with fear. Between the ages of 15 and 27, fear paralyzed him, left him inert in Keuruu, unable to leave the boundaries of the walls for fear of being attacked and infected with the Rash due to his non-Immune status. However, after the loss of his sister and knowing that Lalli was taken care of with other friends and people who'd take care of him, he threw himself into the same Silent World he'd avoided all those years in order to hunt down the kade to protect his family and retrieve the soul of his grandmother. While doing that, he faced dozens of monsters, including one that was most dangerous to mages like himself, and risked losing himself like his grandmother did. This change hinged on the loss of anything to lose in his life, and ensuring that his cousin, the very last living member of his family, was safe and taken care of. Alone and isolated from the people he knows and cares about, and with hope of finding some way to return home, Onni would most likely end up building on the courage he's started to develop while out in the Silent World in Adventure II - navigating the world with caution, protecting himself and others, learning what he can to survive - he will adapt.
TRANSFORMATION
Emotional and mental transformation is something Onni has no real aversion to. While he tends to be more on the stubborn side, resistant to change, he also has no problem admitting when he doesn't know something and learning, adapting to the world around him in order to survive. Physical transformation - well, that's something completely different. Any kind of physical transformation will remind him of the horrific transformation (cw: body horror image) that comes with being infected with the Rash, which starts as a simple rash and slowly progresses to becoming a Troll. Trolls are horrific malformed creatures, twisted and mutated, and without anything but the most base form of thought and instinct. Physical transformation will terrify him at first, in a deeply panicked way that very little else can elicit from him, and it will take some time for him to understand and trust that it could be anything normal or safe, navigated with caution instead of blinding terror and helplessness. It'll be a difficult learning curve for him, but he'll pick up on it eventually.
LOSING CONTROL
Loss of control is another topic that Onni will struggle with. In his everyday life, he's used to being in control of his surroundings and often the people around him as well. He bosses his cousin around, he's the one that other people come to for advice or when they need to understand something to do with being a mage or doing magic. Onni is used to being the wise one who knows what's going on, and he doesn't deal well with things being taken out of his hands - it makes him angry and uncomfortable and stressed out and afraid. But, as with all things, he eventually adapts, and does his best to learn what he needs to in order to regain some semblance of control that he can be comfortable with.
3. Connection is the only constant. What kind of bonds does your character form— fast and burning, slow and wary, deep and desperate? How might that shape their time in this world?
For Onni, connection is very rare and difficult to form. After the loss of his village, his family and everyone he knew besides his sister and cousin, he's wary about caring again. People are too easy to lose, people die too easily, and he'd rather not get attached and then lose someone again. He is stated to have some friends in Keuruu, has no objections to chatting and forming superficial friendships with people who don't overly annoy him, routinely protects the people around him regardless of how he feels about them, but he tends not to get close to others very easily. Affection comes extremely slowly to Onni, slow and wary, but once it's formed, it is formed for life and Onni would happily die for a person he's formed a real, deep bond with. Once he's allowed someone into his life, they are like family, deeply embedded in his soul and immensely precious, worthy of his effort to move heaven and earth to protect them. As is shown in canon, when Onni truly loves someone, like he loves his sister, he is willing even to cross the boundary into the afterlife at serious risk to his own life, just to be with her again. When he loves someone like his sister and cousin, he is able to expend incredible amounts of energy to summon a god to protect them from a country away. There is nothing he won't do for someone he loves.
As for how that might shape his time in this world...he'll struggle somewhat with forming Tethers with others because of his tendency to hold himself back emotionally and avoid trusting or deeply caring about others. This means he'll be at risk of Succumbence, which may push him to open up faster than he would otherwise, as afraid as he is of physical transformations. Forming Tethers would be the less of two evils, and may pull him back from the brink...
4. What are two major forces in your character’s personality that are often in conflict? (Ex: logic vs emotion, power vs guilt, obedience vs rage, etc.)
Two traits of Onni's that are constantly at conflict with each other are fear vs. power.
As previously stated, it kept him immobile in the safety of Keuruu for years, unwilling to even go beyond the city's walls despite being a powerful mage. While he has, of late, thrown himself into danger seemingly without concern for himself, that is primarily a steep learning curve for him and rather than being born purely out of any kind of healthy courage formed over time, originated from essentially having nothing left to lose. While he obviously had some desire to return and makes efforts to keep himself safe in the Silent World, he also went to efforts to sort out his affairs and ensure to the best of his ability that no one could follow him or know where he'd gone - the mission was primarily self-destructive, no matter what his motivation was. While he's developed some courage out in the Silent World recently, he's still got an intense fear of loss and physical harm and corruption, and some part of him will still crave finding a place of safety and staying there.
The contrast to his fear is his power - Onni is an extremely powerful mage with an extremely powerful luonto (cw-free infographic!) in the shape of an owl that allows him to do extremely powerful magic. This raw power is something he was born with, and has spent his whole life training to hone into something that is steeped in technique and explosive power. There are, of course, mages who are more powerful than Onni in the comic, but he is by far the most powerful among the main and secondary characters, and is shown to be well-respected by other mages. He is able to summon a goddess to manifest a fiery bird (cw: one creepy ghost) to drive away trolls, beasts, and spirits that have been stalking his cousin, sister, and their party. He does so while he is located in Sweden and they are located in Denmark. Despite the power he has at his fingertips and the ability to call down gods, however, he has spent the majority of his life cowering behind city walls, maintaining protective magic, which has, as the comic artist says, rendered him "rather useless."
VESSEL SELECTION
Which Vessel Type are you choosing: Token or Offering? Token.
Why does this Vessel type feel appropriate for your character? The abilities and scope of a Token are essentially the same as a mage's in Onni's canon, and will be extremely easy for him to adopt and develop. Essentially, it will feel familiar for him, and he'll have an easier time adapting to it. (Besides that, I am not particularly interested in playing out monster transformation.)
Choose one OR list three subclass options within your chosen Vessel type that you think would suit them: Beastkin - This subclass really fits Onni's style! He's used to calling on the elements of nature via gods and goddesses, and calling upon flora and fauna is not too far off from that! He's also very drawn to the wilderness and good at sensing natural energy, and even has a handy dandy animal form (cw-free canon art) to draw from!
