Backtagging ▫ Always more than welcome. I like to try to finish threads as quickly as possible, but with real life, it's pretty rare that happens in one sitting! I do tend to lose track of things if they're more than a few weeks old, though, so I may ask to handwave the end of something if it's gone on too long.
Thread-Hopping ▫ Absolutely. I very much enjoy being threadjacked.
Fourth-Walling ▫ I am not a fan of fourth-walling and would like to completely avoid it for Onni, please!
Offensive Topics ▫ I have a strong IC/OOC divide when it comes to character opinions and actions vs. the player's opinions, so it's almost impossible to offend me with things that happen in threads.
In Character
Hugging & Kissing ▫ Onni is not a fan of being touched unexpectedly, so he'll probably jerk away and may also yell. And if he's asked first? It's probably going to be a no...unless he has close CR with your character and he's very worried about them.
Flirting ▫ I would love to see him flirted with but he won't get it at all. It will go right over his stupid dense head, unless it's directly identified as flirting, in which case, his response will probably be 'why?'
Sex/Sexuality/Relationships ▫ Onni is extremely demisexual, to the point that he's bordering on asexual when left to his own devices. He doesn't think about sex or relationships, misses it when people flirt with him, and hasn't even really given much consideration to what gender/sex he might be interested in. Basically, what all this means is that Onni will probably only ever get into a relationship or have sex if he falls in love with someone, and then is also made aware that he's fallen in love with them.
Fighting ▫ Onni is actually a pretty decent fighter, and between his magic and his physical size and time in the military, he packs a heck of a punch.
Injuring ▫ Yes, but I would like to discuss anything permanent beforehand.
Killing ▫ Depends on the situation. Please discuss with me.
Telepathy/Mind-Reading ▫ I'm totally open to it, just let me know it's going to happen first so we can figure it out and I can supply info in the meta!
Opt Out
Warnings ▫ Onni's canon involves discussion of gods, spirits, ghosts, and an apocalyptic epidemic/pandemic with strong elements of body horror, including animal-related body horror. There are also mentions of animal violence and possible passing mentions of suicide committed as a preferable option to being infected with a disease. Please reply to this entry with the info in the textbox to opt out of discussion of particular topics, or Onni himself. Feel free to add subjects you would like to avoid even if they're not on the list above, and I'll keep those in mind as well!

Personality
❄ Loyal/Responsible ▫ There is nothing Onni hates more in the world than having to travel and leave his comfort zone, to risk going outside of the military base he lives on, and he categorically states that everything worth knowing or seeing is right at home. But still, he forced himself to travel to Sweden despite his fears so that he could talk to his sister and cousin on the radio. He cares deeply about the people in his life and readily adopts people that his loved ones start to care for, extending his circle of people he shows concern for. His loyalty to his family and extended circle of people is so strong that it overcame his fear, to the point he was able to travel not only to Sweden but further to Iceland to pick up Lalli and meet the other members of the crew that he's spoken to on the radio only a few times, or met in dreams. Beyond this, he shows an incredible capacity for responsibility, having taken over the care of his cousin and younger sister at the tender age of 15 and having been primarily responsible for their upbringing. He works hard to instill good values into them, refusing to let them make excuses for bad behaviour or get away with doing the wrong thing. And once he's sure his family has been taken care of, he overcomes his fear yet again to go out into the Silent World in search of the monster that killed his family.
❄ Honest ▫ Onni is a very honest person, to the point of bluntness. He pretty much always speaks his mind, makes it clear what his opinion is, and doesn't try to fake things. In fact, when Onni lies to Lalli at a crucial point in the comic, Lalli is so used to Onni's honesty that he doesn't think to question what he was told for at least a month or longer. When he realizes Onni lied, he comments angrily - "He never lies. Sometimes he won't tell you things, but he doesn't lie." This holds true throughout the comic in Onni's actions. With that one exception, he always either clearly says what he's thinking or planning, or he doesn't say anything at all, with speaking his mind being much more frequent than hiding things.
❄ Egoless ▫ Onni is very self-assured and aware of what he's capable of. He knows his own strengths and weaknesses and generally how to compensate for them. He has nothing to prove to anyone and very little concern for what people think of him. Lacking any kind of egotism, he won't do things just for the sake of looking impressive, doesn't much care to be thanked for things that he does, and doesn't particularly relish compliments or being told that something he did was impressive. Things done performatively, to improve one's appearances to other people, seem impossibly stupid and pointless to him. In Onni's opinion, people are what they are and offer what they offer, and his respect is earned through action and real skill rather than by reputation. A good example of this in the comic is his treatment of Reynir the first time they speak. While the rest of the cast finds Reynir, an untrained mage who is non-immune to be a burden and liability, frequently calling him names or ignoring his input, Onni is the one person who listens to him, asks for his thoughts and opinions, and asserts that despite his complete lack of training he may still be able to help. Onni is blunt and not afraid to call it out when people show a lack of intelligence or foresight, but he is never against asking their opinions or admitting when he doesn't know something.
❄ Protective ▫ Onni has a protective streak a mile wide. While he generally defaults to being protective (and, unfortunately, extremely overprotective) of his younger sister Tuuri and his cousin Lalli, particularly after having lost the rest of his family, he also shows a proclivity for protecting most people he's around, even if he doesn't know them. His main function in the military is powerful protective spells intended to keep his community safe, and during the comic, he consistently and reliably responds to calls for help from the expedition and performs spells that save them from dangerous situations on multiple occasions. Even in the dream realm, while interacting with Reynir, who he's only met once or twice and who actively annoyed him on a couple of occasions, Onni shows a strong protective instinct by yanking Reynir back and covering his eyes when they run into what Onni assumes is a dangerous spirit. Instead of letting someone else get hurt, he is willing to step into danger despite his fear, to try to keep the others safe. Sometimes, however, this protectiveness can become something of a problem - for example, he has spent half his life as his younger sister's guardian and has kept her so sheltered that she's willing to risk anything just to see something new and different; he also can be extremely harsh on his younger cousin who has a tendency to act rashly and put himself in danger, because being excessively harsh is the only way he really knows how to keep him in line, and therefore safe.
❄ Inert ▫ Onni is not immune to the Rash, and particularly after having lost almost everyone he cares about to it, he has a deep-seated fear of the Rash and the Silent World. However, while he is afraid of the Silent World and the monsters and spirits infected with the Rash roam and look for prey, it is more the fear of loss that they symbolize. Onni has lost so many people - his parents and extended family, his community, and more recently his sister, and the fear of going through more loss is crippling for him. Because of this fear, Onni lives in a constant state of inertia, and does his best to keep his loved ones in the same state. Without being prodded, Onni would never have stepped out of his routine or left home, would never have left his comfort zone of complete safety. He has almost no inner motivation or ambition, and is content to simply exist, avoiding any kind of risk or danger. While he will shake off his inertia and take steps to do things outside of his comfort zone if loved ones are in danger or there is some other compelling and unavoidable reason to do so, he wouldn't be able to find it within himself to do it for his own benefit.
❄ Overcautious/Cowardly ▫ Onni's inertia is rooted in his fear and excessive caution. These traits have been part of him even since before his family was killed and his village destroyed. Being a powerful mage, Onni is able not only to see the spirits and souls of creatures infected with the Rash, but to hear the voices of those corrupted spirits, creatures that want to consume and kill him and the people around him, and these voices are shown to be both aggressive and manipulative. Because of living with these voices practically from birth, Onni has a somewhat unhealthy fear of anything outside of the safety of cleared and protected land. He has always been terrified of the danger outside his home, and imposed his standards of safety onto the people he loves - primarily Tuuri when he was younger, and later Lalli as well. However, after the loss of his family and village, this fear shifted somewhat from a raw fear of the Rash and the Silent World and what they can do to something more visceral - a fear of loss. Onni is so afraid to lose anything or anyone else that he loves, afraid enough that he won't take risks or allow himself or anyone he loves to be in danger. This fear and the excessive caution and outright cowardliness that comes with it have played a very major role in just about everything Onni has done.
❄ Stubborn ▫ While he has no problem admitting when he doesn't know something, Onni is extremely entrenched in doing things in his own way, and in keeping his own opinions. He has a very particular way of living his life and interacting with others - he is stoic and quiet and doesn't say something unless he means it, he is a pessimist and believes the world is a terrible place, he values safety over almost everything else - and doesn't change those aspects of himself no matter how alternatives are presented to him. Even when he acts contrary to these core aspects of himself, it's because he is forced to choose between two things he believes strongly in, for example choosing between his desire to protect his family and his desire to stay where it's safe. Onni does not compromise on his beliefs, even when pushed and openly defied.
❄ Overemotional ▫ Despite how stoic he is, Onni doesn't keep his feelings to himself because he lacks any intensity of them. In fact, he's extremely emotional, and it is a running joke in the comic that Onni is known to cry. A lot. Onni is very sensitive, easily overwhelmed by fear or grief or anger. Having spent nearly half his life as a guardian to his younger sister and cousin, however, he's learned to put on a stoic exterior, to set a good example for them. This exterior isn't entirely perfect - it's still obvious to everyone around him that he's contending with some serious emotional intensity, but he does for the most part manage to keep it together. Still, underneath the stoic exterior, Onni is sensitive and easily hurt, easily frightened, extremely anxious and constantly worrying, and this intensity of emotion combined with his efforts to be stoic and not burden his loved ones with his own problems (even to the point of telling Tuuri she should never worry about him) mean that he's often shut up with his own feelings, rarely getting to express or really experience them unless he's fighting them.
❄ Caveat/Development ▫ While all of the above traits are consistent and still true of Onni, he has recently in canon behaved in a way that is completely the opposite of most of them, as noted in his history section. This (mostly) isn't a result of any kind of healthy personality development or personal growth on his part. I'm including this bit of his personality section to reconcile that action with the personality traits I've written above, and to give an idea of how they'll even out to once he's no longer in a life-threatening situation. The trip into the Silent World that he's currently making is a sort of act of desperation - he has nothing left to lose, with Tuuri dead and having taken steps to make sure Lalli is taken care of with his new friend, and feels it is time to hunt down the thing that took everything from him. While he obviously has no intention of simply letting himself be killed, since he's still taking precautions with his warning system and by arming himself, he also doesn't seem to expect to come back either. Before leaving, he set all his affairs in order, he assured Reynir that they wouldn't meet again, and he masked his presence in the dream realm so he can't be contacted by anyone he left behind. While it isn't exactly a suicide mission, isn't a conscious attempt to get himself killed now that Tuuri is gone, it is also self-destructive, whether he's doing it out of a desire for revenge or a more noble drive to set right the damage that his grandmother and the kade did to his own home and the other settlements in Saimaa that were affected. Going off on his own into the Silent World without backup or telling anyone what he was doing or where he was going was not done primarily out of healthy courage, but simply from having nothing left to lose. Onni has developed more courage after having to leave Keuruu and travel to Sweden and Iceland throughout the course of this mission, but not to the extent that this trip is particularly healthy. In the context of playing him in game, he will fall closer to his more fearful roots because he has something to lose again - the opportunity to go home and complete his mission, and the safety of Lalli and the rest of the crew (after he discovers they've followed him). He won't be as terrified and inert as he was near the start of the comic, but he won't be throwing himself into danger by any means.
History
Some General World Information: Plot Outline ❄ The Rash ❄ The Known World ❄ Onni Hotakainen ❄ SSSS About Page
❄ Onni was born as the eldest child of Juha and Anne-Mari Hotakainen, the first grandchild of Ensi Hotakainen, on an island settlement in the Saimaa lake. He was not born immune to the Rash, but he did show a very powerful capacity for magic, which meant that he was able to see and hear the voices of the corrupted spirits of the monsters infected with the Rash. This also meant that he was trained by his grandmother in the use of magic from a young age.
❄ When he was six years old, his younger sister Tuuri was born. From the start, Tuuri was much more adventurous than Onni could ever (or ever want to) be, and so he spent much of his childhood protecting her and pulling her back from whatever dangerous plan to go out into the Silent world she was concocting. About a year later, his father's twin brother and his wife had Onni's cousin Lalli. Lalli was born immune and also a mage, so after Lalli was old enough, Ensi stopped training Onni and switched over to Lalli. While Ensi still likely trained him or taught him things on occasion, most of his training at this point was probably taken over by other mages in his village.
❄ Most of Onni's childhood was relatively consistent, with his community going through the motions of sustaining themselves and a comfortable lifestyle in their post-apocalyptic world, attending various traditional (and newly created) Finnish festivals. Every year, Onni's family would go over to one of the agricultural islands to help with the harvest and bring home some of the supplies, and Onni attended school with the rest of the children in the village. He spent a lot of time trying to keep Tuuri in line, as she would often come up with crazy plans to go exploring in the Silent World.
❄ When Onni was 15 years old, he and his family came back from helping with the harvest. While his parents went ahead to attend the harvest celebration with the rest of his extended family, Onni and Tuuri rowed the family's boat back to their home and unloaded all the supplies. Before they could go attend the feast, Onni fell asleep on their couch while Tuuri read outside on the porch. Lalli came running to see them, carrying their grandmother's rifle, and woke Onni up with a poke to the eye, only to tell him that there was a "Code O" in the village - a code for an outbreak. Having been trained in what to do if there was ever a Code O, Onni quickly had his sister and Lalli sit in their boat, took a pair of bug-out bags set up for emergencies, and gathered up some other supplies. After getting the boat loaded up, the siblings and their cousin went to a small island prepared for this eventuality. There, they spent several days in the shelter their family had built there and waited for the quarantine boats to come. While they waited, they could clearly hear screams and gunshots from their home, as well as see and smell smoke. When the boats came, a lot of people were loaded on and put into quarantine, and the three kids got the attention of the boats. They were also loaded onto the boats and put in quarantine. When they got off the boat in Keuruu, a military base that is also the safest settlement in Finland, they were the only people to get off. Everyone else had died.
❄ Onni was recruited into the military after arriving in Keuruu, and Tuuri and Lalli found apprenticeships. Onni stepped into the role of guardian for both of them, working on instilling their families' principles and work ethic into them. Eventually, Lalli went into night scouting and Tuuri became a skald - a scholar and administrator. When Lalli was 13, Onni scolded him for making excuses instead of taking responsibility for his mistakes by commenting that 'we can't make mistakes, grandma made one mistake and look where that got us.'
❄ At some point, either in the military or in school back in his home village (most likely in the military), Onni learned Icelandic, the language of scholars in SSSS. He also continued his training and education in the military, learning a great deal from the other mages and eventually becoming one of the most powerful mages shown in the comic so far, specializing in protective magic likely used to maintain the walls around Keuruu. He did not leave Keuruu in the eleven years that followed.
❄ When Onni was 27, he was approached by a distant relative, Taru Hollola, who asked him to join an expedition she was mounting with a Swedish couple and a retired Norwegian general into the Silent World, ostensibly to do research but in reality to loot valuable books from the ruins of the Old World. Onni refused, and Taru switched her focus to Tuuri, who agreed immediately, jumping at the chance to go on an expedition, and in turn convinced Lalli to go with her. Despite Onni's efforts, they both ended up leaving with Taru. As they got on the boat, Tuuri asked him to come with them because she didn't want him to be alone, but he couldn't bring himself to do go.
❄ Though he'd intended to communicate with Lalli through the dream realm, a shared spiritual space that mages enter when they sleep, Onni discovered that he wasn't able to reach Lalli, whether because of the distance, being stalked by the creature that destroyed their village, or other spiritual/magical barriers. Once he realized this, he worked up the courage to start preparations to travel to the expedition's home base in Sweden where there was a radio. While in the process of this, Reynir accidentally helped Lalli to make his way to Onni's space in the dream realm, where he was able to catch up and see how his sister and cousin were doing. He also told Lalli that they were being stalked by the monster and that it was dangerous for them to try to communicate in the dream realm. Onni continued his preparations for his trip to Sweden and after almost chickening out on the dock at his home (which resulted in him losing most of his baggage) he made his way to the Västerström home, where the expedition planners were staying. He was offered menial jobs in compensation for staying there, and quickly agreed so he could use the radio to talk to Tuuri and Lalli. After the longest wait ever (at least as far as he was concerned), he was able to speak to Tuuri, who was proud of him for leaving Keuruu, and he told her not to worry about him.
❄ A short while later, Onni was helping the Västerström children with their schooling in the kitchen when he suddenly very vividly heard a cry for help from Reynir, an accidental stowaway on the expedition, who was being attacked by malevolent spirits. Onni immediately used his magic to project himself in the form of a large owl through the dream realm, and fought the spirits viciously, both physically and with magic. In the process, the head of his owl form was injured near the feather tuft 'ear', and in real life he awoke to find that the Västerström children had cut off the tip of his right ear, the same side as the injury to his owl form, with a pair of scissors while trying to cut his hair. Shortly afterward, he was able to speak to Reynir on the radio and they tried to work out together what was going on with those spirits, the likes of which Onni had never seen before. Reynir admitted to being untrained as a mage (and informed Onni his Icelandic is bad) but Onni felt he could use his help anyhow. Together they worked out that the spirits likely had human origins, and after telling Reynir that he was unable to help him with his magic, since their magic works through different gods, Onni got Lalli on the radio to teach him some spells to deal with the spirits afterward.
❄ A little after that, Reynir approached him in the dream realm again, this time asking for his help to explore a structure he'd found in the area. Onni refused at first, but Reynir convinced him to go with him, and Onni again reluctantly left his comfort zone, following Reynir to the structure. It turned out to be a Christian church from the Old World, and Onni explained the Christian religions to Reynir for a moment before a pastor lady suddenly appeared. Terrified that it was an evil spirit or a manifestation of that monster again, Onni grabbed Reynir and yanked him back, covering both of their eyes (eye contact being a primary way for evil to take hold of a mage). After realizing that the pastor's spirit was not malevolent, Onni reluctantly agreed to have coffee and cake with the pastor. This meeting revealed some interesting facts - the pastor's purpose was to lead spirits such as the ones chasing Reynir and the others to the afterlife, that she could help if they were able to lead those spirits to her, and most importantly that Onni loves fluffy cream cake. After refusing to help Reynir lead the spirits to the church, Onni retreated to his safe zone.
❄ The spirits continued to stalk the crew on the expedition, and at a certain point they had raised an army of beasts and trolls that were closing in on the crew, and the crew realized they could no longer flee - only stand and fight. While they set up defenses and prepared for battle, Reynir and Tuuri, the only non-Immune members of the crew, waited inside the tank. And as the battle got going and things became scary outside, Reynir entered the dream realm and sent his fylgja (the Icelandic equivalent of the luonto or soul) running to find Onni to ask for help. Onni awakened, took out a kantele (a Finnish stringed instrument) to focus his magic, and summoned Kokko, a mythical bird made of fire and iron. Despite being two countries away from the expedition, Onni was able to direct Kokko to attack the trolls and beasts in an intensely powerful display of magic that turned the tides of battle. Unfortunately, despite his intervention, Tuuri was bitten in the shoulder by a troll. Onni burnt himself out with the magnitude of the magic he'd used, and ended up in a coma, so he was unaware of what had happened to Tuuri.
❄ Onni remained in a coma for quite a while, resting in his space in the dream realm. Reynir came to visit him, finding him in the form of an owl, and they talked a little since Reynir seemed to need someone to talk to. Onni asked after his family, and Reynir chose not to tell him that Tuuri had been bitten and was at risk of catching the Rash. They had a somewhat philosophical conversation, where Onni asserted that the world is a terrible place and sometimes nothing can be done about a bad situation.
❄ A while after that, Onni's dim view of the world was somewhat validated - while still in his coma and resting, he looked up in the dream realm only to see Tuuri's spirit heading to Tuonela (the Finnish afterlife), guided by the Swan of Tuonela. Onni quickly realized that she had died, and begged her not to leave him alone, but obviously nothing could be done. Tuuri had drowned herself rather than allow her spirit to be corrupted by the Rash. Onni woke up shortly thereafter, numb with grief, and had to answer the questions of the expedition leaders about how the team was doing. Reynir came to find him in the dream realm a while after, trying to confess to his previous lie and tell Onni the truth, but Onni, overwhelmed with grief and anger, instead punched him and shoved him against the wall, angrily asking him what he was doing here. Reynir tried to apologize, but Onni simply withdrew and turned away from him, asking if there was anything else he wanted, only for Reynir to tell him that the group had gotten separated from Lalli and had no idea where he was. When Reynir tried to tell Onni he needed someone to talk to about his grief, Onni shut him out of his dream space and told him not to come back.
❄ It took several days before there was any sign of Lalli, when Onni heard him crying for help in the dream realm. At first he thought he was imagining it, but he followed the sound anyway, in his owl form, only to find a spectral giant trying to drown his cousin. Onni pushed the Swan of Tuonela, who was coming to take Lalli's soul, out of the way and dove into the water, transforming to his human form for long enough to punch the creature in the eye and get Lalli free while it was distracted. Shifting back to owl form, Onni brought Lalli back to the safety of his own space in the dream realm, incredibly relieved to see him safe and demanding to know where he was in the real world so he could pass it along to the rest of the crew. But Lalli said he didn't know where he was or whether he would be coming back, but that his friend Emil needed help and he had to go. Onni was again left alone as his family moved on without him.
❄ Onni didn't see Lalli again until more than a month later, when he went along with the Västerströms, Taru, and the rest of the expedition supervisors to pick up the crew in Iceland after they were extracted from the Silent World and kept in quarantine for four weeks. He met Lalli at the dock, put an arm around his shoulders, and reassured his cousin that they would be okay, and not to dwell on Tuuri's death. After rejecting both Lalli's offer of Tuuri's paycheck and Reynir's offer to go to dinner and sightseeing with his family, Onni sat with Lalli to wait for their ride to Reynir's place, where the group was going to stay for a short time. Lalli abandoned him to go sightseeing with Emil (who Onni was not impressed by) shortly thereafter, but Onni simply waited and then went along with the rest of the group in carriages to Reynir's home in a tiny hamlet in the interior of Iceland. He stayed at Reynir's home for a couple of days, looking around the village and inadvertently running in to Reynir's friends, but ultimately asked Mikkel to give Lalli a letter stating that he'd gone back to Keuruu but admitting that he was actually going to Saimaa, the Hotakainens original home. After a short conversation with Reynir where he asserted that Reynir had done nothing wrong in lying to him about Tuuri and stating unequivocally that he and Reynir would never meet again, Onni told him he was going back to Saimaa, and left. His lie wasn't found out for more than a month, at which time Lalli and the rest of the crew decided to follow him back to Finland. Onni was leaving almost assuredly to hunt down and probably confront the kade, the monster that had possessed his grandmother and destroyed his home along with many other settlements in Saimaa, and which had been stalking him and Lalli for years.
❄ After this point, only a few basic facts about Onni's trip through Finland are specifically stated or shown - he traveled to Saimaa where he visited the site of his family's old home and left Tuuri's gravestone with those of the rest of his family, then continued eastward into the Silent World. He was apprehended by a sentinel mage with a huge flock of seagull familiars after trying to sneak past the checkpoint. The sentinel mage had his flock of seagulls stop him, then took a small owl totem from him, registered that he was going into the Silent World, confirmed that if he came back infected he would not be allowed to return, even for quarantine, and sent him onward. At some point he fought and killed at least one large beast or troll, and performed a ceremony with its hide and skull, stringing them up in a tree. The ceremony was likely to set the creature's spirit free, judging by the similarity of its aftereffects to a ceremony performed by Lalli earlier in the comic. As he traveled, he set up strings wound between trees and hung with pine cones and other bits of flora. These strings primarily functioned as a warning system for him as he traveled forward, though the mechanism of it is unclear, and possibly a means of guiding himself home after his mission. He also made a trip into Tuonela, the Finnish afterlife, and essentially kidnapped his sister's soul, and she is accompanying him on his mission as a small bird-shaped spirit. As the rest of the crew catches up to him, he is starting to get the sense of something disturbing his warning system that isn't one of the monsters he intended to warn himself of. The day that he first comments on the presence of an "annoying" spirit or person poking at his warning system (it's Reynir).
❄ After running into the group tailing him, they spend the night in a safe place (once Onni accepts that they're not going to just go home and leave him alone) and plan a way to entrap a set of three bear beasts that are protecting the kade. After the failure of the two different traps they set, the kade comes by and he, Reynir, and Lalli fight it with the help of Tuuri's spirit. They manage to free their grandmother from the kade and have a short conversation with her while Reynir leaves them alone in privacy.
Abilities ▫ Onni's magic is done by calling upon his gods, specifically using the poetic metre of the Kalevala, a well-known book of Finnish and Karelian oral folklore and mythology. The magic is essentially carried out, however, through the inherent power of the mage's individual luonto, a sort of external part of their soul that comes to them before they get their first teeth, and the strength of a mage's luonto is the main factor in how powerful a mage they are. Onni is specifically stated to be one of the most powerful mages in the comic, with only the sentinel mage being shown as more powerful. The spells he does tend to be mostly protective and defensive magic for the protection of himself, his family, and the city they live in, though he seems to also have a significant knowledge of spells that can be cast offensively. He has also been shown to do spells that affect the weather and elements around him, with a piece of artwork showing him manipulating snow and wind. Finnish magic is specifically stated to mainly consist of controlling the elements of nature and affecting the behaviour of spirits and souls, with their primary purpose being that of psychopomps to guide the corrupted souls of those animals and humans who died of the Rash peacefully to the afterlife. Onni has also offered this service to spirits in the comic, most notably the pastor Anne, who he offered to guide on peacefully since lingering isn't good for the soul. It's also been stated that Finnish mages have the ability to do healing magic, though they tend not to focus on it - Onni strikes me as the type who would have at least studied the healing magics a little.

❄ Clothing ▫ long-sleeved shirt, short-sleeved tunic, leather leggings, knee-high leather boots, leather gloves and belt, hooded fur cape, breath mask (to protect him from becoming infected with the Rash)
❄ Weapons ▫ a spear or staff with both ends pointed, a longbow and quiver of arrows, a dagger or hunting knife
❄ Camping Gear/Provisions ▫ any camping gear he has is minimal - he doesn't seem to have a tent or much in the way of provisions and is likely living off the land for food, he probably only really has a means of starting a fire and tools for gathering firewood, etc. as well as a small amount of portable food to snack on
❄ Other Supplies ▫ his 7-string kantele
