CHARACTER NAME: Onni Hotakainen

BACKGROUND

HISTORY: WRITTEN HISTORY (The Wiki is inadequate so I wrote it out.)

PERSONALITY: Answer three of the following questions. Limit this section to 500-1,000 words in total, or 150-300 words per question.
  • What impression does your character give when meeting someone for the first time? How does the first impression differ from your character’s true nature?
  • Onni gives the first impression of being one of those stoic badasses - intimidating, tough, reserved, unemotional, distant. Maybe a bit of a tragic stoic badass, but a badass nonetheless, the type of person you have to just break down a little to get to the soft center of. Some of that is true - Onni is reserved, he is capable of doing things that people would consider badassery though he completely lacks the ego to be an actual badass, and he can be intimidating to the right kind of person. But Onni is much more complicated than that, and he is a person who's full of duality. The reality of Onni is that he can cry at the drop of a hat when the right buttons are pushed, that he is terrified of change and loss, that he's pessimistic and tends to see the worst in things, that he can very often be extremely expressive and even loud, that he operates on a daily basis in a constant state of fear, grief, and anger. The truth is also that there's no pronounced soft center to him - there's no sweet gentle kindness to unlock - he can be quite harsh on people, even those he loves, and deny the existence of both his own softer feelings and those of other people. Onni's expression of love is tolerance of things he deems silly, and most things that aren't base-level survival and safety seem silly to Onni, after a lifetime of struggling to survive and never feeling safe. He is blunt and tactless and to the point and very honest, with little concern for how his words affect others, because he's also stubborn and bull-headed, and does exactly what he wants to do when he wants to do it.

  • How does your character handle stress? What do they do in an emergency?

  • What are some of your character's regrets? How is your character impacted by them?

  • What are your character’s ambitions/goals? Why are they important to your character?
  • Onni's main ambitions and goals in life center around protecting what remains of his family - his little sister (who has now passed away) and his younger cousin Lalli. Besides these goals, Onni really doesn't have a lot of goals or ambitions other than survival. The desire to protect Lalli (and himself as well - survival) led to his main goal in the comic - taking out the kade that destroyed his village and killed his family. Whether he's doing it out of a desire for revenge or a more noble drive to set right the damage that his grandmother and the kade did to his own home and the other settlements in Saimaa that were affected, or just to stop it from hunting himself and Lalli in the dreamspace, this is Onni's major goal, it's why he lies to his cousin for the first time and goes off on his own to hunt and kill the kade. This goal was powerful enough to break through Onni's omnipresent fear of the Silent World and loss, though there may have been some aspect of it that was self-destructive in his grief after his sister's death, considering how he put his affairs in order and insisted he would never meet Reynir again it's likely that he expected to die on this mission. Either way, the kade has been hunting Onni and Lalli for years, ever since they escaped from the village where their families died, and Onni felt that enough was enough, wanted to eradicate that last danger, to set himself and Lalli free from having to worry about being hunted.

  • What are your character’s fears? How do they hinder or challenge your character?
  • Fear is one of Onni's defining character traits. In fact, throughout most of adventure 1, he was almost paralyzed by his fear, struggling even to make a relatively safe journey out of his comfort zone, the city he's lived in for 11 years, in order to get in contact with his sister and cousin - he actually lost his luggage by lingering on the dock until the very last moment and was unable to get more than one small bag. Even on what could be called a suicide mission to kill the kade, before which he got his affairs in order and obviously did not expect to come back from, he takes precautions in the form of a warning system and salvaging his sister's spirit from the afterlife to help him. Onni is afraid of the Silent World and the trolls and beasts in it, he's afraid of being infected by the Rash, he's afraid of being alone, he's afraid of being corrupted - but above all, he's afraid of loss. Onni has lost his whole village and all the people in it, he's lost his family, and then he also lost his sister, and he's terrified of more loss above all else, especially now that he only really has one thing left to lose. That's why he lied to his cousin when he decided to go after the kade, in order to protect him from danger, to protect himself from more loss. His fear both hinders and challenges him, by keeping him from reaching his full potential. Onni is a powerful mage, but as his character description says, he is "rendered rather useless" by of his fear of the Silent World - he can't do all that he could to protect himself and the people around him from danger while crippled with fear.

    SKILLS/ABILITIES:WRITTEN ABILITIES ▫ (The Wiki is inadequate so I wrote it out.)

    NERFING:
    ❄ PSYCHOPOMP ▫ Onni could see and hear spirits, but not necessarily interact with them, meaning he would not be able to shepherd them to the afterlife.
    ❄ DREAMSPACE ▫ Onni would have access to his dreamspace as it is, but without any ability to change it or alter its form, and would continue to go there rather than dream normally. He could not take visitors in the dreamspace, or visit other characters' dreamspaces if they have one.
    ❄ CALLING ON THE GODS ▫ This is a little difficult to quantify because the extent of Onni's powers in canon and exactly what he can do is not terribly fleshed out (he doesn't use magic very often), but it is known that Finnish mages can control elements of nature, see and interact with spirits to guide them to the afterlife, and do some healing magic (though many don't study it and it isn't seen as necessary). Onni could call on the gods at about 10-20% power, meaning he could do all the same things he could usually do, but to a much weaker extent. Rather than the very powerful mage that he is in canon, he would be equivalent to one of the weakest mages in the military - he'd be able to mildly affect the weather in a small radius around himself, for example, rather than summoning a storm; he could command and entreat gods and manifest their powers in a more subtle way, for example he could summon a fire bird, but it would be small, the size of a chicken rather than the size of a building.
    ❄ OTHER ▫ He simply cannot do some of the insane things he's done in canon like travel into the literal afterlife...

    WEAKNESSES: In canon, infection by the Rash can cause mages to become kade, dangerous beings that suck in the souls of other mages. They are also susceptible to being taken and corrupted by kade, usually by eye contact. While either is unlikely considering there's no Rash in game, I imagine he might be susceptible to other similar creatures.
